When I was a student, with not much money to spent on books, I found out about Project Gutenberg where I can download free eBooks. The lack of money combined with my bookaholic habit made me willing to read Jane Austen, Arthur Conan Doyle and other classic authors' works on a computer screen. Nowadays, I only buy books if its not available at Gutenberg (recent works), or if I really want to hold the books in my hand.
"Project Gutenberg is the first and largest single collection of free electronic books, or eBooks."
Its "goal is to provide Public Domain Etext editions a short time after they enter the Public Domain" which means 50 years has passed after the author's death. (quotes from Gutenberg History)
For eg. the book that I recently reviewed, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is NOT in the Public Domain yet because thankfully, Lee is still alive and well.
The Lord of the Rings, by JRR Tolkien, have not entered the Public Domain yet because Tolkien passed away in 1973. Therefore, it will only be available at Project Gutenberg in 2023.
Project Gutenberg is the perfect place to find Classic literature by authors like Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, the Bronte Sisters and George Eliot.
If you need to feed your reading habit, but don't want to spend any money (except your internet bill of course), get it from Gutenberg. The best thing about it is, its FREE. ; p
